A transgender person told a CNN reporter during CNN’s LGBT town hall on Thursday that it was “violence” to “misgender or alter” the name of a transgender person after the reporter accidentally mispronounced the questioner’s name.

CNN’s Nia-Malika Henderson introduced Shea Diamond, a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles to ask a question. Henderson pronounced Diamond’s first name as “Shay,” but Diamond pronounces it “Shia.”

“Uh, it’s ‘Shia’ Diamond,” he said. “Put that on the record. Yes honey, it’s violence to misgender or to alter a name of a trans person so let’s always get that right first.”

Diamond then asked former Housing and Urban Development secretary Julián Castro if he would have a “group of transgender people to counsel or advise” him.

Castro affirmed that he would.
