Authorities say two people in China are being treated for plague, marking the second time the historic pandemic-causing disease has surfaced in the region. In May, a couple died of plague after eating the raw liver of marmot, which is supposedly used to treat ailments.
The plague, which claimed the lives of more than 50 million people in Europe, may be making a comeback. Over 3,000 cases were reported worldwide from 2010 to 2015, nearly 600 of which were fatal. In the United States, two Colorado residents died from the plague in 2015.
The World Health Organization is now categorizing the plague as a “re-emerging disease.”
