Violence in Chicago over the weekend killed nine people and wounded 25 others. The weekend's first reported shooting killed a 9-year-old boy on the Near North Side.
Janari Ricks was playing outside on Friday evening when someone walked up and fired shots toward a group of people, according to authorities. Ricks was struck in the chest by a stray bullet. He was pronounced dead at Lurie Children's Hospital.
Those injured during the weekend violence included a 17-year-old boy and 19-year-old man, who were on the South Side in a vehicle shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday night. Someone fired shots at them from another vehicle, police said. They were each struck in the hand and are in good condition.
Murders in Chicago jumped 139% in July compared to the same month last year, according to police statistics.
