Forty-four students from the University of Texas have tested positive for coronavirus after spending two weeks in Mexico for spring break, a university spokesman told CNN Wednesday.

Approximately 70 students in their twenties flew to Mexico for spring break, ignoring White House orders to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people, as well as nonessential air travel.

The number of confirmed cases nearly doubled overnight from the previous count of 28 reported on Tuesday.

The state of Texas has just under 4,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and 58 fatalities, according to the Texas Department of State and Heath Services.
