Islamic insurgents murdered around 52 young villagers in the Mozambique province of Cabo Delgado on April 7, police report.

The massacre took place in the village of Xitaxi after several young men refused to join an unidentified militant group.

"This provoked the anger of the criminals, who indiscriminately killed — cruelly and diabolically — 52 young people," said police spokesman Orlando Mudumane.

Despite the increasing frequency of attacks in Cabo Delgado, national police leader Bernardino Rafael reported last week that insurgents do not have control of any part of the province.
