The convenience store chain 7-Eleven has opened its first cashierless store in the United States, a development that signals the company's intent to move into the burgeoning economy of self-service retail.
The pilot store is actually located inside the company's headquarters in Irving, Texas. Customers shop at the location by logging into a mobile app and checking into the store upon arrival. After selecting their purchases, customers pay using their phones.
The company is using various kinds of technologies to ensure that customers can be differentiated from one another. A spokesman said the corporation is seeking to offer a "frictionless shopping experience" for consumers.
