Dozens of Niger soldiers were killed in an Islamic attack on an army base in that country, the Niger government said on Wednesday.

The attack that killed 71 soldiers is part of a series of assaults on military outposts in Sahel, a region in northern Africa known for a hotbed of terrorist activity. Much of Niger falls within the Sahel's geographic area.

Terrorist activity in the region has become so destructive that neighboring country Mali has reportedly closed many of its more remote army bases for fear of further attacks.
