Around 750 soldiers are set to be deployed to Kuwait, with 4,000 more following later this week as tensions in the region heighten, according to a U.S. defense official.

"At the direction of the Commander in Chief, I have authorized the deployment of an infantry battalion from the Immediate Response Force (IRF) of the 82nd Airborne Division to the U.S. Central Command area of operations in response to recent events in Iraq," Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said in a statement on Tuesday.

The deployments add to the nearly 14,000 troops that have been deployed to the U.S. Central Command in the past six months and come in the wake of five airstrikes on Sunday targeting an Iran-backed militia. U.S. officials blamed the militia, known as Kata'ib Hezbollah, for recent rocket attacks against Iraqi bases.
