The toll from the new coronavirus has risen to nine deaths and 440 confirmed cases, even as authorities are working to control the outbreak.

The virus has spread from the central Chinese city of Wuhan to Beijing, Shanghai, Macau, Hong Kong, as well as to the United States, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Officials have discouraged public gatherings in the Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, and the World Health Organization is slotted to have an emergency meeting.

The Chinese government is providing updated numbers to prevent panic as hundreds of millions of people prepare to travel for the Lunar New Year celebrations starting this week.

More than 2,000 people are being kept in isolation after coming into contact with infected people. The virus can pass from person to person.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, coughing, and difficulty breathing. There is currently no vaccine for the virus.
