A pair of 90-year-old lovebirds had an emotional reunion last month after one returned home from a hospital stay that left them separated for weeks.
Loretta Bowen spent several weeks in a Georgia hospital after multiple tests revealed a mass in her colon. The coronavirus pandemic kept her husband, David Bowen, from being able to visit her in the hospital. The couple has been married for 71 years.
Their granddaughter, Krista Kellum, shared a video of her grandparents' reunion on Instagram on July 16. It shows the pair greeting each other joyfully, and David crying while the two embraced.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Kellum described her grandfather's anguish at not being able to see his wife.
"... he was just beside himself, not being able to see her because of the coronavirus," she said.
The couple's separation ended a few days after a surgery meant to remove the mass took a miraculous turn.
"On the day of my grandma's surgery, they started with a laparoscopy," Kellum wrote on Instagram. "But, they didn't see anything. So, they decided to go into her colon and look, and the mass was totally gone!"
After a few more days in the hospital, Loretta was released to return home.
Kellum also wrote of her grandfather's strong prayer habit and said the family all began praying when the ordeal began.
"If you know my grandad, you know that he is a praying man," she wrote. "Throughout my entire life he would go every single morning to the church and spend hours praying."
