An 8-month-old baby is recovering after it was found in a New Haven, Connecticut, dumpster, where it was allegedly put by a woman who was the child's babysitter, according to police.
Police identified the woman as 24-year-old Andiana Griciel Velez. She was charged with risk of injury to a child, second-degree assault, and first-degree reckless endangerment.
Velez allegedly assaulted the child's mother, 21, before abandoning the baby. Police said they detained her after the baby was discovered Monday afternoon by maintenance workers outside of the apartment building.
Police said the baby is alive and alert, although she was found with some burns on her hands. She is currently in stable condition.
Although police said Velez was the one who put the child in the dumpster, it is currently unclear who injured her hands.
Velez is being held on $500,000 bond and is due back in court on October 30. She first appeared in court on Tuesday.
