The pilot of an American Airlines flight bound for Phoenix Sunday reported an alarming sight while cruising over an area near Des Moines, New Mexico. Flying at about 37,000 feet, the pilot radioed air traffic controllers to inform them what he had just seen.
"Do you have any targets up here? We just had something go right over the top of us," the pilot said according to Steve Douglass, a radio interceptor who monitors scanners. "I hate to say this but it looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile type of thing — moving really fast right over the top of us."
No military aircraft was reported to be in the area at the time of the incident. Douglass said that no reply from air traffic controllers was noted due to interference from local communication that "walked on top of it."
Media reports on the incident noted the eerie similarity between this American Flight 2292 and the experiences of both a Learjet and a commercial liner near that same spot three years ago. Both of those aircraft reported encountering an unidentified flying object comparable in nature.
Neither American Airlines or the Federal Aviation Administration have offered comment about the most recent incident.
