Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) raised more reelection campaign funds last quarter than any other House Democrat — including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
According to federal elections commissions data, Cortez raised $1.42 million between July 1 and September 30, sweeping past Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Pelosi who both raised $1.26 million.
Political consultant George Arzt expressed his surprise by the freshman congresswoman's fundraising success saying, "This is very rare, unique...I can't recall anyone raising this much money during the first year in office."
The largest numeric demographic came from contributions under $200. Cortez has routinely spoken out against lobbyists and the financial influence they have in Washington, which could be why she has not received the larger donations that other incumbents have. Still, she has not faced challenges in fundraising, a fact that Arzt contributes to her swift rise to fame: "[Ocasio-Cortez] is a celebrity who gained attention from people across the country, and many on the left support her."
