Outspoken Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has joined the chorus of voices on the political left calling for a "full investigation" of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's COVID-19 nursing home scandal.
"I support our state's return to co-equal governance and stand with our local officials calling for a full investigation of the Cuomo administration's handling of nursing homes during COVID-19," Ocasio-Cortez said.
Cuomo's questionable management of the state's nursing home and long-term care facilities during the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic came into sharp focus after state Attorney General Letitia James, a fellow Democrat, released an investigation last month. Her office discovered that Cuomo's administration under-reported deaths in nursing homes by up to 50%.
Since that time, an increasing number of Democrat state lawmakers have come out demanding explanations and accountability from the governor's office. State Republicans even began the process of a formal impeachment of Cuomo on Friday.
Most federal officials have remained on the sideline until Friday, when Ocasio-Cortez made her statement.
"Thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers lost their lives in nursing homes throughout the pandemic," the congresswoman said. "Their loved ones and the public deserve answers and transparency from their election leadership."
Ocasio-Cortez, who has clashed with Cuomo previously, said that recent revelations brought to light by the governor's fellow Democrats in the state legislature "warrant a full investigation."
