A 15-year-old Arkansas student died Wednesday after he was shot by another student on their first day back to in-person classes.

Daylon Burnett was reportedly shot by another 15-year-old at Watson Chapel Junior High School south around 10 a.m. on Monday as students were switching classes. Burnett's suspected attacker was arrested and charged with first-degree battery – charges that will likely be updated following the student's death.

"We don't have a definite motive right now as to why the incident occurred," said Police Chief Kelvin Sergeant of Pine Bluff. "However, we do believe this was a targeted incident as opposed to a random incident."

Burnett's mother announced his passing Wednesday afternoon.

The school, located 40 miles south of Little Rock, was not closed due to COVID-19, but due to weather-related issues that had caused water damage in the building.

Police found the suspected shooter in a nearby neighborhood by using a dog squad. A judge has set the suspect's bond at $1 million.
