An armed Chicago store owner confronted hammer-wielding looters early Monday, firing shots and detaining one of the intruders, according to Assistant State Attorney James Murphy.

The owner of St. Lucia's Smoke Shop decided to stay at an apartment above the store over the weekend to watch out for rioters and looters.

Around 4:20 a.m., the shop owner grabbed his handgun and ran downstairs after hearing sounds of broken glass. He saw a group of male looters wielding hammers stood in the middle of his shop.

After yelling at them to stop, the looters sprinted toward the owner before he fired his gun in an attempt to make the men retreat. He was able to capture and handcuff one of the burglars, but the rest of the men escaped with around $800 worth of cigars and e-cigarette supplies.

The man the shop owner was able to detain, 22-year-old David Sloan, was charged with felony burglary.
