An inmate who escaped from a work crew in Anderson County, South Carolina in 1979 was captured in Delaware on New Year's Day.

Jose Chico Romero, 64, had been living under an assumed name when he was arrested on December 28 after showing a fake ID to Dover police, according to Chrysti Shain, director of communications for the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Dover police processed and released him under the name Arnaldo Figueroa but arrested him again on Wednesday after his fingerprints came back as a match for Romero.

Romero is currently being held in Georgetown, Delaware on a fugitive warrant among other charges.

He was serving an 18-year sentence for armed robbery when he escaped 40 years ago. Romero will serve the remainder of his sentence, approximately seven years, including any time added for an escape conviction.
