At least 53 soldiers and one civilian were killed Friday in an Islamist "terrorist attack" on a military post in northern Mali near the border of Niger.
The deadly attack follows separate attacks on army posts in Mali in September that killed 38 soldiers.
The troubled West Africa border has been plagued by violence since al Qaeda-linked Islamist militants took control of the north of the country in 2012. With the help of France, Mali’s armed forces have reclaimed much of the territory, but violence continues. Jihadist fighters often target military outposts.
