The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms reports that there are officially more guns in circulation in the United States than there are American citizens, with the country holding 1.2 firearms for every man, woman, and child in the country.

That number tops out at just under 423 million pistols, rifles, shotguns, and revolvers. Among those classes of firearms are 17.7 million AR-style rifles, which former presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke vowed to outlaw before dropping out of the race due to low polling numbers.

The arms industry also produced 8.1 billion rounds of ammunition last year, representing around $4.1 billion in sales.
