Intensive care units in Atlanta are at "full capacity," the mayor of that city said on Wednesday, a sign that the coronavirus hospitalization surge may be reaching its critical stage there.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms begged city residents to stay home, citing the strain on city hospitals that the coronavirus epidemic has already wrought. She said one downtown hospital's capacity was already short due to water damage in some facilities.

She added that healthcare facilities are still treating other medical emergencies in addition to cases of COVID-19.

Experts say the U.S. is still well off from its peak of coronavirus cases.
