The U.S. Postal Service is investigating after mail containing absentee ballots was found alongside a road in Wisconsin.

The Outagamie County Sheriff's office said three trays of mail were found in a ditch on Tuesday morning, and a USPS spokesperson confirmed the mail included absentee ballots.

"The United States Postal Inspection Service immediately began investigating, and we reserve further comment on this matter until that is complete," spokesman Bob Sheehan wrote.

It is unclear how many pieces of mail were involved.
