Officials in Beijing have canceled large-scale Chinese New Year celebrations to help prevent the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.

At least 17 people are dead and more than 600 confirmed infected from the coronoavirus. Both Wuhan, where the outbreak began, and nearby Huanggang have been put under lockdown.

"In order to control the epidemic, protect people's lives and health, reduce the mass gathering and ensure people to have a harmonious and peaceful Spring Festival, it is decided to cancel all the large-scale events, including temple fairs, in Beijing as of today," said the governmental Beijing Culture and Tourism Bureau in a statement Thursday.

The Chinese New Year runs from January 25 through February 8.
