In a new book detailing his road to the White House, a key advisor to President Joe Biden is described as saying, "COVID is the best thing that ever happened to him."
The book, Lucky: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency, said top Biden advisor Anita Dunn made the comment to "an associate" last year. Authors Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes included the quote in a section of things that "campaign officials believed but would never say in public."
Many political analysts have said that the pandemic played a key role in undercutting support for former President Donald Trump, but the comment caused outcry from conservative critics who have previously suggested that Democrats wanted to use COVID-19 for political profit.
Dunn first worked at the White House under former President Barack Obama in 2009 as interim communications director. In 2020, she was the communications director for the Biden campaign and served as the co-chairwoman of the Biden-Harris transition team.
She currently serves the White House as a senior adviser.
