On his first day in office, President Biden has issued an executive order that calls on American public schools to permit biological males to participate in female sports.
"Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports," Biden's order says.
The order does not specify whether Title IX funding will be withheld from schools that disregard the order.
The executive action comes after 17 states introduced legislation in 2020 that limited school athletes to participating only in sports of their biological sex. After one such bill became law in Idaho, a federal judge blocked its implementation.
Biden's order is a dramatic shift from Trump administration policies which supported the petitions of female athletes across America who objected to competition against biological males.
