Joe Biden said on Monday that police that are under attack should shoot people "in the leg instead of the heart" to avoid killing an assailant.
"Instead of standing there and teaching a cop, when there's an unarmed person coming at them with a knife or something, you shoot them in the leg instead of in the heart is a very different thing. There's a lot of different things that could change," Biden said during a meeting with community leaders in Delaware
Biden's recommendation appears to suggest a way to reduce the number of fatal shootings by police. However, police are taught not to shoot unless it is a last resort and to assume that any shot could be lethal. The femoral artery also runs down the thigh, making a gunshot to the leg also potentially fatal.
The former vice president's remarks follow protests over the death of George Floyd, who died after an arresting officer knelt on his neck.
