Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates announced that his foundation is funding new factories to manufacture seven coronavirus vaccines.
During an interview on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Gates said he believes his foundation can save time in finding a vaccine for COVID-19.
Gates is picking the top seven available vaccine candidates and building factories for each of them. Although he predicts only two of them will be chosen, funding all seven will expedite the process.
"Even though we'll end up picking at most two of them, we're going to fund factories for all seven just so we don't waste time in serially saying 'ok which vaccine works' and then building the factory," he said.
Gates said he is aware that billions of dollars will be wasted in constructing factories for vaccines that are not chosen, but said he believes it is worth the loss.
"It'll be a few billion dollars we'll waste on manufacturing for the constructs that don't get picked because something else is better," Gates said. "But a few billion in this situation we're in, where there's trillions of dollars... being lost economically, it is worth it."
