Jerry Brown, the former governor of California, leveled allegations against congressional Republicans on Tuesday, claiming the politicians were at fault for the burning wildfires in California.
Parts of California have been under significant threat of fire in recent weeks. Some commentators have claimed that climate change has caused the fires to spread and burn even more devastatingly than they normally would have.
Brown on Tuesday explicitly linked the fires to climate change, telling Republicans that the environmental phenomenon “is real, and you and everyone else will recognize that.”
“California’s burning while the deniers make a joke out of the standards that protect us all,” Brown said while testifying before the House Oversight Committee’s panel on the environment. “The blood is on your soul here and I hope you wake up. Because this is not politics, this is life, this is morality. … This is real.”
Brown also spoke against the Trump administration rescinding a waiver that allowed his state to set its own auto emission standards.
