California legislators are currently considering a bill that would prohibit California department stores from segregating toys and clothes for children by gender.
The law would do away with "boy aisles" and "girl aisles" and require that products be sold in a single gender-neutral section "regardless of whether a particular item has traditionally been marketed for either girls or for boys," according to the bill. It would apply to department stores with 500 or more employees.
If passed, it would go into effect in 2023. Stores that fail to comply could see a fine of $1,000
