CA school district approves plan to rename schools named after Washington, Jefferson

Two elementary schools in the San Francisco area, one named for George Washington and one named for Thomas Jefferson, will be renamed after the local school board unanimously passed a "Black Lives Matter" resolution.

The schools' names are being changed because each of the founding fathers owned slaves. The new names for the schools, which are in the Berkeley Unified School District, have not been determined.

Other tenets of the adopted resolution include anti-racism education for district employees and an ongoing "Black Joy Campaign," which will feature training and resources for teachers, additional data collection, and increased monitoring for racial inequality.
