A 33-year-old California man attacked several Trump supporters, including an 84-year-old woman, during a pro-Trump rally in Aliso Viejo, police said.
"Witnesses said he had blown smoke in their face, was yelling profanities at them, and then punched several of the females," Sgt. Dennis Breckner said.
After the man attacked several people, a retired police officer pulled his gun when the man pulled a small pocket knife, the Orange County Sherrif's Office said. The man attempted to run from the scene but was detained by the retired police officer until deputies arrived to the scene.
Deputies found a pocket knife into a nearby bush, which witnesses say the man threw into the bushes.
Alvin Gary Shaw was taken into custody on suspicion of elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault and battery, the Orange County Sherrif's office said.
"This could have been a very serious incident," Sgt. Dennis Breckner said. "In this case, this was just two groups that disagree, and while we support people and their using their First Amendment rights to put out their message, we prefer that that remain peaceful."
