Air Canada has announced that it will no longer use the phrase “ladies and gentlemen” when addressing passengers on its flight, out of respect for passengers who do not identify as either women or men.

Canada’s largest airline declared this week its intent to abolish “specific references to gender” in its on-board announcements. The airline will instead use phrases like “everybody” or “tout le monde,” which means the same thing in French. The policy has been unofficial for years and was made a company rule only recently.
