Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced a sweeping ban on 1,500 different "assault weapons" in Canada, a rule instituted through an executive cabinet rather than the country's legislature.

Although effective immediately, the law will grant two years for Canadians who own the banned weapons to return them to the government, with the legislature purportedly intending to stipulate "fair compensation" for the confiscated guns.

Scolding Canadian hunters who he claimed had no use for the kinds of guns he banned, Trudeau said that "you don't need an AR-15 to bring down a deer."
