Cardinal George Pell — former Vatican treasurer and the highest Catholic official to be convicted of child sex abuse — will be freed after Australia's High Court overturned his convictions Tuesday.

In a summary of the decision, the High Court said that the jury "ought to have entertained a doubt as to the applicant's guilt with respect to each of the offenses for which he was convicted, and ordered that the convictions be quashed and that verdicts of acquittal be entered in their place."

The ruling nixed his previous conviction on one count of sexual penetration of a child and four counts of committing an indecent act with a child.

Pell will be released immediately and his name will be removed from Australia's child sex offender registry.
