Umar Kyakulaga, a Muslim man in Uganda who caught his wife in possession of two Bibles – one in English and the other in a tribal language – beat her and forced her to drink pesticide.
After finding the Bibles, Kyakulaga asked his wife, Zubeda Nabirye, if she had converted to Christianity. Nabirye told him that she had been reading the Bible in order to compare it to the Quran.
"I was convicted and decided to embrace Christianity," Nabirye said she told her husband. "My husband began reading verses in the Quran that allowed men to beat their wives if they disobey them, and after that he started beating me with slaps and sticks. As if this was not enough, he forced me to take Dithane M-45," she said.
Nabirye said she tried not to swallow the pesticide but when her husband began to strangle her, she ingested some before falling unconscious. Neighbors found her hours later, groaning outside, surrounded by her own blood and vomit.
Her neighbors got her to a hospital where she has since recovered. Since being released, she has been staying in an undisclosed location with another Christian family.
Nabirye said that because of her conversion, she doubts she will be allowed to reunite with her three children — ages 16, 13, and 9 — who are currently living with her mother-in-law.
