Controversial radio broadcaster Don Imus passed away Friday night at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in College Station, Texas surrounded by his wife Deirdre and his 21-year-old son Wyatt, according to a statement released by his family.

Imus hosted his radio program, "Imus in the Morning," from June 1, 1968 to March 29, 2018, which aired on numerous radio stations and digital streaming platforms for nearly 50 years.

Imus was fired from CBS in April 2007 after he made derogatory comments about the Rutgers University women's NCAA basketball team. During an April 4 broadcast, he referred to the team's players as "nappy headed" and "rough girls."

Imus was also known for leading several charity drives for children suffering from cancer and for taking care of sick children at his Imus Ranch in New Mexico.
