As countries begin to evacuate their citizens from China on Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus passed that of the SARS outbreak in the early 2000s.
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus jumped to 5,974, compared to the 5,327 cases in mainland China during the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome from 2002 to 2003.
The death toll rose to 132, which is less than the 348 killed during the SARS outbreak.
Chartered planes carrying around 200 evacuees each arrived in Japan and the United States on Wednesday. Passengers on the U.S. plane included diplomats from the U.S. Consulate in Wuhan.
The city of Wuhan, where the virus originated, has been shut down by authorities.
