Coronavirus cases top 200,000, death toll more than 8,000

The global total for confirmed cases of the coronavirus has topped 200,000 according to Johns Hopkins University. The death toll has topped 8,000.

As of early Tuesday morning, the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering's online tally showed 201,436 confirmed cases, with 82,032 listed as recovered. It also showed 8,006 deaths.

China, Italy, Iran, Spain, and Germany had the most cases, with at least 81,102 people in China, 31,506 people in Italy, 16,169 people in Iran, 13,716 in Spain, and 9,877 people in Germany infected.

The World Health Organization announced last week that Europe is the epicenter of the pandemic.
