56 are now dead and nearly 2,000 sick from the Wuhan coronavirus, China says, with their health minister warning that "it seems like the ability of the virus to spread is getting stronger."

Calling it a "grave situation," Chinese leader Xi Jinping said that the spread of the virus is accelerating despite the drastic measures being taken to try to contain it.

Pandemic fears are rising worldwide after cases of the virus have been confirmed in countries outside China, including Thailand, Australia, the United States, and France.

In the U.S., the third confirmed case was announced late Saturday, in Orange County, California.

American officials announced that they are evacuating personnel from the U.S. Consulate in Wuhan, along with some private citizens, aboard a charter flight Tuesday.
