Countries restrict travel as coronavirus spreads

As cases of the coronavirus continue to grow in mainland China and spread beyond it, officials in other countries attempt to prepare for and contain the virus.

China reported 508 new cases and another 71 deaths from the coronavirus, bringing its mainland totals to 77,658 cases and 2,663 deaths.

Health officials in South Korea and Italy have instituted restrictions on travel and gatherings. A dozen towns were sealed off in Italy's north, where more than 200 people were infected, and the number of infected in South Korea grew by 144 to a total of 977.

An Italian doctor staying at a hotel in the Canary Islands who tested positive for the virus prompted a quarantine for hundreds of guests.

Croatia and Austria also reported their first cases of the virus, and residents of Croatia, Hungary, and Ireland have been advised against traveling to Italy.

The United States and Japan have both urged its citizens to avoid traveling to South Korea.
