A federal court has ruled the state of Idaho must pay for the sex reassignment surgery of an inmate, making him the first inmate to receive sex reassignment because of a court order.

Mason Dean Edmo, who is transitioning from male to female and goes by the name “Adree,” was convicted of sexually abusing a minor.

A federal district judge ruled in favor of the surgery in December 2018 before the governor of Idaho appealed that decision, which was upheld. Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R) said the state will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“The court’s decision is extremely disappointing,” Little said in a statement. “We cannot divert critical public dollars away from the higher priorities of keeping the public safe and rehabilitating offenders.”

Reassignment surgery can cost between $20,000 and $30,000.
