New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday issued a dire warning about the spread of coronavirus in that state, claiming that the quarantine measures there are "not slowing it" and that peak infection is still as many as three weeks away.
The governor said the rate of infection is doubling every three days.
Cuomo said the state may have need of as many as 40,000 intensive-care beds, along with 140,000 hospital beds total. The state's current capacity for hospital beds is just 53,000, with only upward of 4,000 of those beds marked for ICU.
"We need, at a minimum, an additional 30,000 ventilators," the governor said, adding that the state has also experimented with splitting one ventilator between two patients.
More than 25,000 people in New York have tested positive for the virus.
