Pop star Demi Lovato, who recently identified herself to podcast host Joe Rogan as a pansexual, appeared on national television and proclaimed that she decided to cut her hair short in order to break free of Christian culture.
Being pansexual means that Lovato is attracted to men, women, and those who identify as other genders or gender-nonconforming.
Saying she had grown tired of the "gender and sexuality norms" developed by her Christian, southern upbringing, Lovato claimed she was finished trying to be the "sexy, feminine pop star."
Lovato said that cutting her hair led her to feeling "liberated because I wasn't subscribing to an ideal or a belief placed upon me to be something that I'm not."
Pressed by Barrymore about her music that addresses her own journey toward sobriety and her new pansexual lifestyle, Lovato said it is all part of changing people's perspectives.
"If you don't like it, fine," the singer said. "But if this provokes a conversation and raises awareness, takes away the stigma about the topics I'm talking about, then that's what I want, is to just open people's perspectives and to change the conversation around recovery, too."
Lovato had previously said that growing up Christian led her to "shut down" her attractions towards other females – something she no longer feels shame over.
