The Democratic Party went after Mount Rushmore on Monday night, saying in a now-deleted tweet that the monument represents "glorifying white supremacy."
"Trump has disrespected Native communities time and again," the Democrats wrote. "He's attempted to limit their voting rights and blocked critical pandemic relief. Now he's holding a rally glorifying white supremacy at Mount Rushmore – a region once sacred to tribal communities."
The tweet, which was deleted after roughly an hour, follows an announcement that President Trump will attend a fireworks display at the landmark
The comment sparked instant backlash, with some commentators pointing out that online "cancel campaigns" are not the same off-line.
The tweet also follows predictions earlier this month that Democrats would soon target Mount Rushmore.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem reassured at the time that Mount Rushmore would be protected.
