Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) has served CNN with a $435 million lawsuit, claiming that the cable network published a "demonstrably false hit piece" against him in late November.
CNN aired a report on November 22 claiming that Nunes had traveled to Vienna in an attempt to obtain compromising information on Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. The network said Nunes had met with a Ukrainian prosecutor and was also in contact with a former Soviet national.
The lawsuit argues that the ex-Soviet was the network's source for the story. Nunes has denied the article's assertions.
🔦 Under United States libel law, a public official must prove that an outlet either knew a story was fake or acted with "reckless disregard" when publishing it.
