The recent “parading” of a dead blue shark at a seafood festival in England generated outrage, with commentators and politicians slamming the display of the deceased marine animal.

The blue shark, a species listed as “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, was claimed to be a “by-catch,” or an inadvertent catch in a commercial fishing operation. The shark was hoisted through the crowd before being cooked on a stage and served to the assembly.

A European Parliament representative in whose district the seafood festival took place called the incident “not acceptable,” claiming that “by-catch cannot excuse this shameful behavior.”
