Dr. Joseph Fair, a virologist and NBC News contributor, has confirmed that despite appearing on NBC nearly a dozen times to document his battle with COVID-19, he never actually had the virus.

"My undiagnosed/suspected COVID illness from nearly 2 months ago remains an undiagnosed mystery as a recent antibody test was negative," Fair said.

On May 14, Dr. Fair appeared live on the morning show Today, where hosts Hoda Kotb, Craig Melvin, and Savannah Guthrie all lamented his condition. Kotb noted that the medical expert had tested negative four different times but affirmed, "clearly you have it." The other two hosts agreed, dubbing what they believed to be "false negatives" in his testing "scary."

During the interview, Fair offered his best guess that he had contracted coronavirus through his eyes while on a plane. He also boasted about his physical condition prior to his illness, saying, "If it can take even me down, it can take anybody down."

Despite never testing positive, Dr. Fair continued to appear on NBC programming, including NBC Nightly News, Deadline: White House, and Meet the Press, discussing his perspective having battled the virus.

"I was a very healthy person. I exercise five to six days a week," he said. "If it can take even me down, it can take anybody down."
