It was a tragic start to the new year for the zoo in the German town of Krefeld, as the facility's monkey house burned down overnight, killing almost all of its inhabitants.

Dozens of orangutans and chimpanzees died in the incident, along with birds and bats who lived in the house. Two chimpanzees survived the fire and the nearby Gorilla Garden was untouched, according to the zoo's Facebook page.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, though some report that celebratory fireworks may have caused the tragedy.
