European Union to close borders for 30 days

The European Union announced on Tuesday that it would shutter its external borders for 30 days in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus, effectively putting the entire union on lockdown until the danger has passed.

The development follows the Canadian government's decision to close its borders during the height of the crisis, as well as the United States closing its borders to travelers from Europe, currently the center of pandemic activity.

The union will ensure that citizens of member EU countries are repatriated across the closed borders. European Council President Charles Michel said on Tuesday that the inter-governmental body will do "whatever it takes" to stave off the spread of the deadly disease.
