A New York state man was killed after a prototype of an explosive device originally meant to be used at a gender reveal party accidentally detonated, according to local authorities
Soon-to-be father Christopher Pekny, 28, died after the prototype for an explosive prop detonated. His brother, Michael Pekny, 27, was injured.
The accident occurred in Sullivan County, roughly 100 miles from New York City.
"It wasn't meant to harm anyone," said Trooper Steven Nevel. "It was just an innocent prop for a gender reveal that went horribly wrong."
The materials the pair used for the device were not immediately known.
"We've seen these [accidents] happening around the country and 'Don't do it' is the only thing I can say," Nevel said.
