Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is reportedly under investigation by the FBI over allegations that she married her brother in order to facilitate his entry into the United States.
FBI officials reportedly met with an individual in October who provided agents with numerous documents related to the representative's marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. The wedding took place in 2009, and the couple divorced in 2011.
Rumors have swirled for months that Elmi was in fact Omar's brother and that the marriage was a sham so that Elmi could obtain a green card for entry into the United States. If true, the union would constitute marriage fraud, which could come with a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of up to $250,000.
Omar divorced her husband Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi last year over allegations that she had an extramarital affair. The representative had previously been married to Hirsi before getting divorced from him and marrying Elmi. After her divorce from Elmi, she re-married Hirsi before divorcing him again in October.
